Bodily Injury Liability (Required)

What It Pays For
Medical, rehabilitation, and funeral costs if a member of your household is found at fault. Also legal costs and settlements for non monetary losses (pain and suffering).

The Choices
Coverage limits can be as low as your state minimum requirements and as high as $500,000 per person and $1-million per accident.

We Recommend
If you have a home, bank account, or a reasonably well paying job, buy at lease $100,000 per person, $300,000 per accident.

Property Damage Liability (Required)

What It Pays For
Repair and replacement of vehicles and any other property you or members of your household damage in an accident.

The Choices
You can buy various limits, from the state minimum of $5,000 to $100,000.

We Recommend
At least $100,000. State minimum requirements are as low as $5,000 and often won't cover repairs, or replacements of today's cars.

First Party Benefits (Required)

What It Pays For
FPB can pay medical and funeral costs, a portion of lost wages and the costs of in-house assistance, regardless of fault, based on a level you choose.

The Choices
A Basic coverage of $5,000 for medical is required. Higher limits are available.

Collision (Optional)

What It Pays For
Repair of your auto damaged in a collision or rollover, regardless of fault. Reimburses the car's market value - minus the deductible - when the car is totaled.

The Choices
Deductibles can range from $250 to $2,500 per accident. Higher deductibles cost less.

We Recommend
At least a $500 deductible. Consider dropping entirely on low-and-mid priced cars eight or more years old.

Comprehensive (Optional)

What It Pays For
Repair of auto damage from windstorms, flood, fire, theft, vandalism, cracked windshields and some other events. Reimburses market value of the car or car parts minus the deductible after a theft.

The Choices
Deductibles range from $50 to $2,500. Higher deductibles cost less. Some insurers won't offer deductibles higher than a certain amount.

We Recommend
At least $100 deductible. Consider dropping entirely on low-and-mid prices cars eight or more years old.

Full or Limited Tort (Optional)

What It Pays For
Determines when you would have the right to sue for pain and suffering.

The Choices
You must choose Full or Limited. There is an approximate 15% savings by choosing Limited Tort.

We Recommend
Choose the option which best fits your philosophy on lawsuits and suing, balanced with the premium difference and your exposure in the event you can not sue.

Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Coverage (Optional)

What It Pays For
Medical, rehabilitation, and funeral costs, and/or losses from pain and suffering resulting from an accident caused by a hit-and-run driver without insurance or without enough insurance.

The Choices
Limits similar to those of bodily injury liability. Most states say you can't buy more of this coverage than you buy of liability insurance.

We Recommend

In densely populated areas where lots of people drive uninsured, this coverage is essential. Buy at least $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident where such limits are offered.
